Radiography: (volumentric)

There are various forms of radiography. What all these forms have in common are the need for a source of radiation and a place for the shadow created from radiation passing through the object being radiograhed to be stored or viewed, and access to both sides of the item being radiogaphed is required. Although radiography is a very useful volumetric NDT method, without very highly specialized techniques radiography is limited to being a two dimensional inspection. It is important to realize that radiographic interpretations are based using only a length and height measurement. Radiographic inspection alone should not be used for engineering and strength calculations, and fitness for service determinations. Radiographic interpretations should be considered as a way to evaluate workmanship and process quality levels.

Permian NDT, Inc. utilizes three radiographic methods in various combinations. These are gamma ray-silver based film, gamma ray-phosphor based image plate, and x-ray-phosphor base image plate. Radiography may be performed digitally or manually based on the customer's needs and requests.

Permian NDT, Inc. utilizes lr192, Se75 and Co60 gamma ray sources. Ir192 is most commonly used. Se75 sources are used on thinner materials and in areas with limited space to work. Co60 is used on heavy iron and concrete materials, usually over 3" thick. Our x-ray tubes range from 150KV to 400KV with capabilities of penetrating up 1.5" of steel.
